USA State Maps publishes clear, printable U.S. state outline and county maps with direct Census Bureau source attribution.
What this publication covers
USA State Maps is a reference site for people who want a clear view of U.S. state boundaries. It offers one page for each of the 50 states and an additional page for Washington, D.C. Each page includes a blank outline and a version with county or equivalent divisions. The files are SVGs so they can be enlarged, placed in a document, or printed while keeping the line work sharp.
The site focuses on administrative shapes. It does not attempt to provide street directions, current road conditions, property surveys, or topographic detail. The map types guide explains the purpose of each kind of map and points to a more suitable official source when the question needs one.
How the maps are made
We use the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2025 Cartographic Boundary Files for state and county geometries, selecting its national 1:5,000,000-scale KML files. The published coordinates are projected into SVG drawings. The county version overlays the matching county or county-equivalent boundaries on the state shape. Land and water area figures shown on state pages come from attributes in the state boundary file and are converted to square miles.
Because the source is designed for small-scale maps, its boundaries are generalized. This makes the site useful for broad reference, school work, and ordinary illustration, while also setting a clear limit on local precision. Each state page names the dataset vintage and links to the Census source so readers can check the original files.
The SVG drawings carry a title and description. On state pages, hovering over a county-level shape reveals its Census name; an alphabetical list provides the same names without using the map. The site also offers PNG copies for document tools that do not accept SVG. Both download formats come from the same drawing and do not introduce additional geographic detail. How we keep pages consistent
The state pages are generated from one structured set of names, codes, area attributes, and county-level records. This lets a reader compare how many divisions appear in different states while keeping the source year consistent. The alphabetical name list on each page is taken from the same county file as its internal lines. We review the generated pages for missing downloads and broken links before publishing an update.
